A karera program lists a lot of bets: WIN, PLACE, FORECAST, TRIFECTA, QUARTET, PENTAFECTA, SUPER SIX, DAILY DOUBLE, PICK 4, PICK 6, WTA. If you grew up around the OTB you may know them by heart. If not, here is every one in plain words, the way they work in EZ Karera.
Bets on one race
These bets are settled by the finishing order of a single race.
| Bet | You pick | You win if |
|---|---|---|
| Win | 1 horse | It finishes first |
| Place | 1 horse | It finishes first or second |
| Forecast | 2 horses in order | They finish 1st and 2nd, in that order |
| Trifecta | 3 horses in order | They finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd, in order |
| Quartet | 4 horses in order | The first four, in order |
| Pentafecta | 5 horses in order | The first five, in order |
| Super Six | 6 horses in order | The first six, in order |
Win
The simplest bet. Pick the winner. If you are new to karera, start here: you learn to read the program and the probables without the extra puzzle of finishing order.
Place
Your horse only has to finish first or second. Because it is easier to hit, it pays less than Win. In EZ Karera the place pot is split in two halves, one for each of the first two horses, so a place on a dehado that sneaks into second can still pay well.
Forecast, Trifecta, Quartet, Pentafecta and Super Six
These are the "exotics". Each one asks for more horses in exact order, and each step is much harder to hit, so the dividends grow fast. A Super Six means calling the first six horses home in exact order, which is why it can pay so much when it lands.
Covering more than one horse
You do not have to pick only one horse per position. If you think two horses can win and three can run second, choose them all. The game works out every combination for you. Two horses on top and three different horses under them is six Forecast combinations, and each combination costs one unit. The bet slip shows you the total before you confirm.
Bets across several races
An EZ Karera card is ten races. These bets ask you to pick the winner of several races, and they are set on the card the way a real program does it:
| Bet | Races |
|---|---|
| Daily Double | The winners of two races in a row |
| Extra Double | Races 2 and 4, or races 6 and 8 |
| DD+1 | Races 8, 9 and 10 |
| Pick 4 | Races 7 to 10 |
| Pick 5 | Races 6 to 10 |
| Pick 6 | Races 5 to 10 |
| Winner Take All (WTA) | Races 4 to 10, seven winners in a row |
Pick 6 and Winner Take All carry over
These two are the jackpots, and they follow the same idea as the real track. If nobody picks every winner, 75% of the pot (after the cut) carries over to the next Pick 6 or WTA, so it keeps growing. The other 25% goes to the best tickets as a consolation. For the Pick 6, "best" means the most winners in a row from the first leg. For WTA, it means the most winners in any of the legs.
Which bet should you play?
- Learning: Win and Place. You see results every race.
- You have a strong opinion about one race: Forecast or Trifecta, with your top pick on top and a few horses under it.
- You like a long day of studying: the Daily Double and the Picks reward reading the whole card.
- You like the long shot: Super Six and WTA. Hard to hit, big when they land.
Every bet in EZ Karera is played with free chips only. Chips can never be cashed out, so the only thing riding on your read is bragging rights.
